Under the general direction of the Secretary and Undersecretary, the Deputy Secretary is the principal advisor on public policy matters for the Office of the Secretary.   This position will ensure the boards, departments and offices within the California Environmental Protection Agency are at the forefront of environmental science, using the most recent research to shape the state's environmental laws so that decisions are based on accurate information and science, and that the underlying science is meaningful and defensible.
